When Ofcom released its latest proposals for the future of the UK’s postal service, it was only natural to see some panic unfolding: Saturday deliveries scrapped! Letter volumes tanking! What’s Actually Happening? ⚡
- Second-Class letters are no longer to be delivered on Saturdays.
Instead, they’ll arrive on alternate weekdays (but still within 3 working days). - First-Class stays exactly the same: six-day delivery with a next-day aim.
- Delivery performance targets are being tightened, with new standards that aim to improve consistency and customer trust.
- Ofcom will continue to review affordability for everyone, especially vulnerable groups.
And crucially: This is all to keep the Universal Postal Service alive and functioning in a world where people are sending fewer and fewer letters. In fact, the system was designed for 20 billion letters a year. It's now only handling 6.6 billion (with numbers anticipated to decline further).
